Is it possible to align a group relative to a text element?

Asked by Marnanel Thurman

How can I make it so that a group is positioned relative to a text element?

Suppose I have a rectangle with a piece of text horizontally centred within it. Is there a way to place a group, which lies entirely within the rectangle, immediately to the left of the piece of text so that even if someone comes along and changes the text the group will remain immediately to the left of the piece of text?

I think I get what you mean: anchor an object as if it's a character, eg the first character of a line of text where that text is centre-aligned and centred on some other object? Is that right?

OOo.org allows you to anchor things (pictures, etc.) as if they were a character - no doubt you could do this with a script in Inkscape but I don't think it's possible with any of the built in stuff. I'd think the best way would be to left-align the text, group with your marker (or whatever) and re-centre it relative to the box if you need to.

Can you help with this problem?
