dpi settings in Export Bitmap

Asked by SwarfEye

Seems like there have been a number of questions around this in the recent past, but none of them seem to speak directly to my issue.

Before I ask my question, I want to say thank you for this wonderful program. I really love it and have been promoting it to all of my graphic designer friends. Anyway, here we go...

I am trying to make a png image file that is 1024x768 and 72 dpi for a web site project that I am working on.

In the export bitmap function the default image is 1024x768 90 dpi. For some reason, I am not able to change the dpi without changing the dimensions?

I am aware that Inkscape defaults to 90dpi, but I ought to be able to get a setting other than the default right? I have also changed the preferences to 72 dpi to no avail.

How can I export my drawing at 1024x768 72 dpi?

Thanks,

Bill

See document settings at Ctrl+Shift+D
For screen pixel-graphics the dpi setting means nothing. Document properties px values are calculated using 90dpi pixels. You need to export at 1024x768, whatever the dpi setting shows. Dpi makes sense only when your picture is to be used in real world units.

Hmm...

Yes, I have seen the setting at Ctrl+Shift+D. These settings do not seem to address my concern.

I have come to realize that the dpi setting does not matter for screen pixel-graphics as you say. That said, my work process requires that I print out my designed pages for review. I would much rather print them out at 300dpi and 8.5 x 11. It seems reasonable that users ought to be able to control this stuff no?

How can I gain control over these settings? As far as I can tell, Inkscape has it's way and will not accommodate any other way? Or am I missing something?

Ok,

I think that I'm figuring this out. The size of the file exported is determined by the size in the document properties. You can change the size of the document there at any point.

It is worthy to note that when you export a png file, many of the areas that appear to be white in your Inkscape drawing are actually transparent, and so when you view your exported file it may appear to have the wrong shape because of this.

It does seem as though the dpi setting in the Inkscape Preferences -> Import/Export -> Default Export Resolution has no bearing on the actual dpi of the exported file. 89.9922 seems to be what we are stuck with whether we like it or not?

The simple way to do it is to work at 90 dpi for you design to export at 72 dpi select all and use the shift+ctrl+m to transform, using scale upsize by 125% then when you export it should be consistent with the scale you need. I did a short post on my blog about it <href="http://webmojo.co.uk/blog/inkscape-exporting-at-72-dpi">http://webmojo.co.uk/blog/inkscape-exporting-at-72-dpi</a>
