Vertical Text

When I use the text tool, the text is placed vertically like:
a
b
c
d
 rather than horizontally as abcd. There seems to be nothing in the tutorials or help screens concerning how to enter normal text. How is it done? I know it is possible because the tutorials were purported to be Inkscape documents and they have normal text.

On "Tool controls bar" and in Ctrl+Shift+T dialog there is a option for this.

Thanks. As you can tell I am new to Inkscape. I feel that the tutorial could be a bit more explicit concerning "Text"
