change picture on file icon

Is there a way to either before or after saving a file as an svg to make the file icon be a picture of the file instead of the inscape logo? In order to select a file by sight rather than having to open several files that may have similar names to find the one needed.

There's a windows extension (if you happen to be using windows) - the file thumbnails display in windows folders.
