rectangle tool writes as a grey edged square

Rectangle tool writes as a grey edged square instead of simple rectangle. How do I turn it off and get back to normal rectangle?
Sorry if this is basic but only started with program yesterday

Hi John,

what I understand here is that you've got a stroke on your rectangles and you want to get rid of that stroke.

To remove the stroke, open the Fill & Stroke dialog (Object -> Fill and Stroke), switch to the second tab ('Stroke') and click on the X icon.
