how to rotate an object "freehand"

Asked by sbt

I'm a new user. Right off the bat, I need to rotate an object around its axis, but not in 90 degree increments. I can see the tools which flip horizontal or vertical, and which rotate 90 degrees. I'm used to a tool which allows custom rotation using the mouse. Am I blind?

Select object with one click (or drag selection box around object; or drag with Alt for touch-select), you see the handles for enlarging/contracting.

Select again on same object, you see the handles change to those for rotating.

Use control-drag to move in 15deg increments on just drag.

Change the rotation centre with shift drag on the small cross.

The tutorials are at Help > Tutorials and are really very good IMO.
