Closing pop-out menus

I have just downloaded Inkscape today, and find that the pop-out or fly-out menues remain open until eventually the screen is covered by them. Obviously, there is a simple answer to this, but I can't find it. How exactlyy do you close these menus?

Either form the top-right cross icon or from the same place you opened these. Also from preferences you can set to have close button for each (takes away useful space).
This behavior itself is to be considered a Good Thing™, it becomes useful when you want to play with settings or apply similar settings to many objects.
