svg import layers

I would like to combine a number of SVG drawings, created in inkscape) that all have up to 10 layers - and would like to keep the layers. Ideally I would like to combine the layers with the same names (eg, the Roads layer on each drawing all become the one Roads layer).

Can this be done?
