Update clones of grouped object

Asked by Timothy Smith

Hi. I'm trying to make a page of business cards. The paper has 2 columns and 5 rows. I would like to have a "master" card in the first position, and clone it into the other 9 positions. I would like to be able to edit the master (change some text, update the background image, etc.), and have it update the other 9 clones.

I can create the "master" card image, and select all + group + clone the other 9. But to edit the master image, I have to ungroup it. And then the clones are not updated.

Is there any way to accomplish what I want? Or would I have to delete the clones, update the master, and then re-clone and re-place the other 9 cards each time I make a change? I'm doing this for a friend and would really like the update process to be as simple as possible for her.

Thanks!

First, use Edit->Clone->Create cloned Tiles to make these 2x5 (maybe you already did).
Secondly, you can double click to enter any number of groups, masked or clipped paths to edit these. Just double click on it.
And thirdly, I should not group these but use clipping rectangle instead which is exactly the business card size. This makes editing easier, so your objects which go to the edge do not have to be precisely positioned.

Also you may find the development version interesting, as this has Release Mask and Release Clipping path at rightclick, and way better PDF export.

Can you help with this problem?
