Asked by Trish Suder

Am 72 yrs. old and needlework designer. I only bought this for converting color photos to pattern or undetailed sketch so it will help me short cut the process from having to trace photo on lightbox, many hours. Would appreciate straight to help instead of me reading entire manual...AM old and not real computer savy....ANY WAY YOU CAN DIRECT ME RIGHT TO PROCESS...THANKS MUCH TRISH

Hi Trish,

are you, by any chance, using 'Fashion Designer Pro'? Or where did you buy Inkscape (the software where you clicked on 'Ask Us a question' in the help section)?

This is the answers section for the free and open source software Inkscape, which can be downloaded for no cost from https://inkscape.org and which is created by an international group of volunteer software developers.

Inkscape's licence permits sale, but anyone who does sell it, needs to tell the customer who wrote the software and the customers need to be given access to the program's source code.

That said, you can find some tutorials for the automated tracing functionality in Inkscape on the following linked web pages:

https://inkscape.org/en/doc/tracing/tutorial-tracing.html
http://www.wikihow.com/Trace-an-Image-Using-Inkscape
http://goinkscape.com/how-to-trace-a-photo-in-inkscape/
http://goinkscape.com/how-to-vectorize-in-inkscape/
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

For turning an object in Inkscape into a pattern, please see:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html#Attributes-Patterns-Define

If you need more help, you're welcome to joing the Inkscape forum at http://www.inkscapeforum.com/ , where you will find many expert users who can give you volunteer support with the software.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
