Saving File

Asked by jherndon

I am very new to this kind of software, so I really don't know what I am doing. I am currently using Freeway to design a website, and I wanted use Inkscape to create a logo. The only way that I can see to save the file is to export the file as a bitmap, but when I import the file into Freeway the image looks terrible. How can I save the file and provide a crisp graphic for the website? Thank you for your help.

You could try using SVG image directly on the web. Just google for it. If this is solution for you depends on your project, as not every user has a SVG compatible browser yet.

I have no idea why Freeway shows your bitmap images terrible, maybe it sucks. But you could try exporting your logo exactly at pixel-for-pixel size, this means the very same size, as you will use it on the web.

In Inkscape, the Save As (or Save a Copy) dialog gives you many choices of file types as well, for example PDFs. Worst case scenario, you can open your logo SVG in The GIMP then export it from there.

For your use, though, Export Bitmap should do the trick. Just in case you read that as an actual BMP file (which would be very painful!), it is actually saving as a PNG. Some things to do:
Set the Export Area to either Page or Drawing. Page will give the full page as it is in Inkscape, whereas Drawing will trim the image to precisely the dimensions of your logo. Make sure you set the correct dimensions within Inkscape in that Export Bitmap dialog, since the image is of course much nicer scaled before it becomes a raster graphic (a PNG).

How does the file look when you open it up with a different image viewer?

Hey there,

I appreciate you responding so quickly. I apologize for my ignorance,
but this is the first time that I have tried using a program like
this. I am after being able to create images for logos that resemble
the quality of the icons on my iMac, and those shown in many of
tutorials for Inkscape.

I am attempting to use Freeway to design a website, but when I import
the image as a graphic item the quality seems poor to me. When I view
the image through Preview it seems better but not as clear as I would
like. Is PNG the best file format for that type of image, or is there
something else that would do a better job? Is there something that I
am missing?

Thanks again,
Jonathan

You could try exporting at double dpi or even 4 times larger picture and scaling it in GIMP or whatsoever graphics app.
Some sharpening afterwards may also help.

Don't bother yourself with the Freeway preview, the final output is what counts.

PNG is the best format for clear logo graphics. PNG also supports alpha-channel transparency (only such usable for web by now) and uses lossless compression (bigger files, but no jitter or degradation of quality like JPG compression does).

Can you help with this problem?
