choosing text colors before texting

Asked by yonnie

Text always comes up as black. I have to click where I want it, type a letter, click undo, select a color from the color chart below and then type the words. If I select another location for text, it's all black again. How can I set the text color to be a certain color and to stay that way before I text?

If I double-click on the text icon the Inkscape properties comes up and leaves me no color choices either. When I can get the fill & stroke window to come up, that sticks me with needing a number. So where can I get a chart that shows me what colors correspond to what numbers?

This most probably wants a hex color value. The very same number is show in colorchooser labeled "RGBA:"
But in 0.46 in the "textbutton doubleclick dialog" there is a button named "Take from selection", which takes attributes from selected object and remembers these. This ought to be what you want.

Using the "Take from selection" button doesn't alter a thing. If I double click on the text selection button to get to this "Take from selection" button, it still prints text in black. This feature doesn't go active until after typing a text. Then using undo, I can then choose a color. As soon as I use enter or select another position for more text, the text is back to black.

Currently, you can only set the color of a text after creating it. You can color the whole text (having it seelcted then pressing a color swatch) or color a part of the text (selecting the desired characters with the text tool then selecting a color swatch).
Editing text and pressing a swatch without a selection will color the whole text.
That's the way it works at the moment. It has a lot of place for improvements, though. So if you want it, you can create a new blueprint with a more usable specification. Maybe a developer finds it interesting and picks it ;-)
