Using Symbol True Type Fonts

I have the Symbol TTF installed on my computer so that I can use alpha, beta, gamma,... in an astronomical article I am writing. It's fine for Word docs, but it doesn't appear in the Inkscape drop-down font menu for drawing onto images. Can you help, please?

You may choose a font with unicode support (bitstream and many others) and use greek characters directly (use character map or copy from here): ΑαΒβΓγΔδΕεΖζΗηΘθΙιΚκΛλΜμΝνΞξΟοΠπΡρΣςσΤτΥυΦφΧχΨψΩω
