ellipse behavior
I am totally new to inkscape and am working my way through the tutorials and help files. In trying to duplicate the Can of soup example, the ellipse doesn't behave as shown. I create the ellipse so that it is properly symmetrical and aligned with the grid. I convert it to a path. When I select the node tool, I properly see 4 nodes at the apexes of the ellipse. the handles associated with those nodes are not rectilinear. When I delete the top node according to the example, I do not get half of the ellipse, but a distorted partial lower portion.
Thanks for any help

I see that my question was rejected as being invalid but have no idea what this question site is for if not to answer questions as to why inkscape might not behave as described in the online manual. I would appreciate an explanation to save myself from wasting my time trying to learn this program.

It was marked invalid by spam bots on launchpad, sorry about that.
When you delete the top node, you're supposed to have a distorted top part, but a valid bottom part, and only get the half ellipse after the
"Open the path up by selecting the two side nodes and clicking on the icon (Delete segment between two non-endpoint nodes) icon" part
Thanks for clarifying the rejection. I suppose it happened because I had just registered. I have since resolved my problem which resulted from selecting the wrong tool icon.
