Watercolor-filter object gets faded when exported to PDF

Asked by Michael Ots

I have a design with an object that has a watercolor filter applied to it. The object is a semi transparent UK flag. For export a extra layer is enabled providing a white background behind the object. When exported to png, all is fine, but when I export to PDF (using save as...) the flag color are faded. What causes this?

Hi Michael,

if you checked 'rasterize filter effects' for your export, then the watercolor-filtered object should look the same as before. Make sure to select a sufficiently high dpi value for your purpose (web, monitor: e.g. 96dpi, print: e.g. 300dpi).

If with this option, they still look different, please:

- Upload the svg file to imgh.us or framadrop.org (or any other file hoster of your choice)
- upload the pdf to framadrop.org (or any other file hoster of your choice)
- upload a screenshot of your pdf export settings to imgh.us or framadrop.org (or any other file hoster of your choice)

Give links to each upload in your next post.

- tell us your operating system and version
- tell us your Inkscape version (Help -> About)

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention the "rasterize filter effects" was on with the PDF that resultet in faded colors.
When the option is off, the watercolor effect was completely gone in the PDF and the original straight forward flag was shown (which is probably to be expected).

Thank you, Michael!

I can reproduce the issue here, and was able to find it in the bug reports here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/381677

I've made the flag part of your drawing into another test case SVG for Inkscape developers and attached it to the report.
I'm sorry that I cannot give you a workaround or other kind of answer - it's an open bug :-/

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Thanks for the support. To bad its a bug. Hope it gets fixed soon, although the fact that the bugs been open for years does not make me feel optimistic. Are the files on dropbox still needed, or did you attach them to the bug report?

All relevant files have been attached to the report.
You can safely remove the files from your dropbox.
