'Export As...' default folder

Asked by Dave

I would like to set the 'Export As...' folder to some default other than the userAccount\bitmap.png that Inkscape picks for me. I looked into the default settings (which I managed to customize other settings like canvas size, etc.) but no clue if Export folder can be custom set.

Is it possible to set the default Export folder, say to something like "D:\Images\png images\" ? If so, how?

Dave.

Hi Dave,

mmh. I think you mean 'Save as...' ?

For me, it always uses the last used folder. Isn't it the same for you?
There is no 'default' setting, it always changes, depending upon what I used last.

I think on Windows, there's an option one can set where you choose to use Gtk dialogs. Maybe that can help?
Ah, found it:
"Edit > Preferences > Interface > Windows > Desktop Integration > GTK open/save dialogs"

Does anything change if you use those?

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Thanks Maren for the quick reply.

GTK open/save dialogs doesn't seem to help.

Let me be clearer, and here is what I would like Inkscape to behave for me on Windows ( 10 to be specific).

I open svg files from different location edit them and then export the PNG version to a specific folder, and assume this to be "D:\Images\png\" on drive D:

Now, every time I open an svg file, when I invoke Export, the export dialog will always start up with a default filename as follows:

C:\Users\Dave\bitmap.png

If you are working with a lot of images, manual editing of the filename (or equivalently, file picker navigation) just becomes tedious.

Ideally this is what I think should happen:

1. The folder defaulting to above as "C:\Users\Dave" should be user configurable in settings, say under the name "Export to folder" or directory" something like that.

2. The file name part bitmap.png should ideally be the same as *.svg except for the extension where svg changes to png, BUT I can live with that, which is just back-deleting and typing in. Folder name editing, on the other hand, is not that tidy if you have a long path name and will often be error-prone. File picker with navigation is equally unattractive if the path depth is deep and on different drive.

If I can fix the 'Export To Folder' in settings as desired, the default filename would come up as:

D:\Images\png\bitmap.png instead of what Inkscape picks for me as C:\Users\Dave\bitmap.png

I hope my question is clearer.

Kind regards,

Dave//

Ah, thanks for explaining a bit more. I really didn't get that you were referring to the 'Export PNG' dialog.

I think this can be set via a template.
The export path for png images via 'export png' dialog is saved within the file.

So you'll need to create a custom template, where all you change is just that you export the page area once to the desired location.
For the rest (where to save, which other settings can be changed) please refer to:
https://blog.evomind.info/tips-tricks-how-to-create-your-own-standard-template-in-inkscape/

In the latest Inkscape version (0.92), the suggested file names are like 'original_name.svg.png' for me.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

(as for the feature request: you can still make one in the bug report section, the route via custom template isn't too obvious, I think)
