IWhat is the meaning of 'swatch'? It is not in your FAQ

Asked by Christopher Charles Erswell

What does the word 'swatch' mean in the context of Inkscape? It seems to have many meanings in online dictionaries but not one that makes sense in the context of Inkscape.

Hi Christopher,

a swatch is a named color that is available via a palette.

There are two different kinds:

- Colored fields that you can click on to set an object's color, no extra functionality. Find those in the palette at the bottom, see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html#Attributes-Color-Swatches

- Custom swatches: Colors that you can name, and that can be used on multiple objects in your drawing. When you change the custom swatch's color, all objects that have it applied change color, see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html#Attributes-CustomSwatches

Kind Regards,
 Maren
