How do I change perspective on an imported object?

Asked by PhilToalston

Okay. I'm very new to this. Here's my problem. I have a company logo that I'm trying to utilize within a marketing piece I am designing. Basically, the logo is very flat and one-dimensional. I need to stretch it a bit to change to perspective to match a 3D object. To be more precise, I am trying to paste our company logo onto a jpeg of a box. On the side of the box, actually. I'm sure there is terminology for this that I do not know, that would very quickly describe what I'm trying to do, but as I mentioned, I am very new to design and have no lingo skills. How do I make this logo look like it is actually on the side of a 3-dimensional box. Any help you can give me would be great. thanks.

The perspective extension (Effects -> Modify Path -> Perspective) should help. See the Inkscape guide for some information on how to use it:

http://screencasters.heathenx.org/wp-content/videos/ep064/ep064.html shows use of perspective on paths, you make one 4 node path and use that to apply the perspective to your other path via menu options Effects > Modify Path > Perspective.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMbIPleMiZ0 looks like it might eb helpful too it shows some perspective effects on paths and text.

I don't know how to do this on imported raster images however. It would be possible with a matrix transformation like in GIMP you could then import and fix it to the box you've made (presumably using the perspective cube effect?). This kinda makes sense as we're talking about a raster effect on an image and not a vector transformation - seems best to transform the image first, then import and add your vector art.

Thanks guys. That helped me understand how the perspective tool works, which I've never had a chance to use. I'm sure I'll find lots of ways to use it. I'm still unable to use this method on a jpeg image, however. I'll check out GIMP and see if I can do that. I really don't understand what a "raster image" is or a "vector".

For reals, I am a newb. I'm an artist, but am only just learning the vast world of image manipulation and layout. I am a toddler.
