How do I make the document properties permanent so that they are defaults for a new file?

David,

Create a new Inkscape document, change its settings they way you want and then save this file as ~/.inkscape/templates/default.svg (on Linux) or C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Applications\Inkscape\templates\default.svg (or similar - I don't have windows here)

Thanks for your information. I'm on Windows and saving the file to

Documents and Settings\USERNAME\.dia\

places the file name in the File -> New list.

when I am clicking at the button (or select menue/hotkey) inkscape shut down ... without any message?
