Default SANS font -- select

Asked by carmen fierro

I am running Inkscape 0.91 on Windows 7, and my problem/wish is to get Inkscape to use a FONT OF MY CHOICE for display on the working screen AND exporting to .png, while still issuing an .svg with the generic font-family="sans-serif" . Editing programs usually implement this feature -- i.e., Sigil...
REASON: I chiefly edit images (formulas, maps, diagrams...) for inclusion in my e-books --.epub -- with a fall-back .png, and I dislike to inflate the .epub with embedded fonts, OR the .svg by rendering all fonts as paths. My reader on the desktop allows its own choice of fonts, and the one on the smartphone falls back on the .png -- O.K. One can also choose the defaults on the browser, and it shows when checking the .svg, but Inkscape insists on the system default, which just now is Segoe (which I dislike in images) for clear-type, and has been changed without warning at least once... I'd rather let it be.
And, by the by, when exporting to Optimized SVG for the .epub, it would be appreciated an option to change height and width to 100% (for maps) or some other relative measure, without touching the viewBox, to allow for automatic scaling. I usually do it by hand from Sigil--after some heart-burning because the image doesn't behave as expected, as not all books in my library have maps, and one forgets between editions...
Many thanks.

Hi Carmen,

you've put your two feature requests into the answers section, which is for answering short user questions. Feature requests should go into the 'Bugs' section, where developers will read them.

Here's a bug report, that also refers to the sans issue (but proposes a different solution):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1582690 - maybe you'd like to rekindle discussion there?
Or, if you create a new feature request, you can link to it, so people can see that the problem also has another side.

As for the 'save as optimized svg' feature request, that should land in the bug section for scour, which is the program Inkscape uses to produce optimized svgs: https://github.com/scour-project/scour/issues

As a temporary workaround for the font issue, you could automate a search-and-replace task for your svg files. I.e. use the font you want in Inkscape, then later replace it by the font you want to use. This could be a very quick script, that can also do the width/height thing for you automatically. Or you can use Extensions -> Text -> Replace font from inside Inkscape.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Sorry, unused to this kind of board.
I take it that what I ought to do, is to move my problems to the bugs list,
as in your kind answer--once I work out how to do it...
Meanwhile, I shall keep changing fonts on and back through the extension
(taking care with the placement of the text anchors for it to work well on
maps) and editing by hand width & height -- as I understand that there
isn't any way to do the things from Inkscape...
