How can i get rid of background in a picture?

I do not know how to get rid of a background in a picture. Step-by step instructions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Adina,

I'm not sure what kind of background you mean. Inkscape's background is transparent by default.

-> You're trying to remove the background of an image that you imported (a jpg, png or another raster image):
 either use clipping as described here: http://goinkscape.com/how-to-crop-an-image-in-inkscape/
 or use a program that is meant for editing raster images, like Gimp.

-> On exporting? Use File -> Export to PNG, and the background will be transparent (unlike 'Save as ... -> Cairo PNG)

-> You want to remove a document background color that you have accidentally set? Go to File -> Document properties and select a transparent background color (alpha value must be 0).
