In general, Inkscape doesn't provide a way to arbitrarily style the next object before it's created. But if you want to change the default styling of the pencil tool, you can do that in the Inkscape Preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P), or double click the pencil tool's icon.

I'm taking over this question actually. I need to know how to change it too.

Just change it to whatever you want in the bottom left corner widget

Hm, Alexandre, I think you're little misunderstood answer.
The bottom-left widget work only with *created yet* objects.

The answer is - how to set stroke *before* creation.

@Oleg

I think you misunderstood Inkscape's functionality. Just try to do it :)

@Alexandre

well, let's do it.

1) Blank page
2) click pencil tool.
3) left-bottom 'widget' - like you call it - show nothing (N/A)

So tell me please - where is the functionality to set stroke width
before drawing, without modifying *existing* object? like in
Calligraphic Pen for example?

that's the question. ;)

Ah, indeed. Weird. This should be reported as a bug.

Inkscape team will most likely not fix it, and say you have to use the Stroke/Fill options while having a pencil line selected so that when you escape, the new line will have that stroke setting. Annoying, I know, should be easier.
