Use the Pen tool (Shift+F6). Click on the starting point, then double-click on the end point. You can draw multiple connected lines by single clicking wherever you want a new corner, then double-click on the final end point.

My thanks to Kurt Hutchinson for his prompt response to my question of how
to draw straight line(s). It works fine but after I finish drawing the line
if I move my mouse (without holding either button down) a new unwanted
straight line appears. How do I terminate the line drawing? By clicking on some
other tool? But going to some other tool puts a line on the canvas, which, of
course, I can always delete. Is there some other way of terminating line
drawing?

You need to double-click on the end point to finish the line. Or hit the Enter key. Single clicking will just draw multiple connected lines, as I said previously.
