Splitting up a text layer

Asked by callumm

Hi - I'm completely new to Inkscape and I'm really just starting to teach myself. I have a fairly large text layer, which is like a list of words. Is there any way of splitting up this list into several text layers (i.e. one layer per word), so that each word can be moved around independently. Or is it quicker just to paste each word in the list one by one?

Thanks very much for your help!

It hasn't been implemented yet but there is a request - bug 171748

You can copy-paste each word into a new text object like you mentioned, but if it's not important to you to keep the text editable as text you can convert it to a path. Then do Path > Break Apart (Shift + Ctrl + K), you will see holes in letters filled in. Then you select all objects that make one word and do Path > Combine (Ctrl + K), this will make the holes in letters again and you'll be able to move that object around independently. Repeat for every word.
