Photo resizing

Asked by Heather

I emailed photos from my phone so that I could download them to my laptop. I need to know how to resize them back to their original size without causing them to become pixelated because I have deleted the original photographs accidentally. How can I fix this and resize the photos without compromising the image?

Hi Heather,

unfortunately, this is not possible.

If you downscaled your raster images (i.e. in this case, most probably jpg images made by a camera), the information in the pixels that have been dropped during this procedure is lost. No kind of magic can restore that kind of info.
You can enlarge the image, but it will either become blurry or pixelated, depending on the algorithm you choose for enlarging.

You can try to use some utility that restores deleted files, but I don't know if there is one available for your phone.

Btw. how does this question relate to Inkscape in any way?

Regards,
 Maren

Inkscape is foremost a vector graphics editor, and thus not the best tool to edit photos.

Maybe you would like to look at the free and open source software Gimp, which is meant for photo editing: https://gimp.org

Thank you. It was suggested to me for photo editing but I haven't really messed around with it yet. I'll just uninstall it. Thank you.
