How to preserve layers from illustrator file

When I import an illustrator file into Inkscape all of the layers are lost. Can I preserve the layers?

Hi Johnb,

I think you may be referring to this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/249469

If the info in the report is correct, then it's currently not possible to import an ai or pdf file into Inkscape and keep its layers.
