Pencil flourishs uses power stroke not pattern along path for triangles in and out

Asked by Blindsite

As I understand it the flourishes and path tapering created using the pencil tool and triangles in and out function by creating a recurring pattern using the pattern along path effect. Problem is when I select triangles in or triangles out the effect I get is Power stroke not pattern along path. Therefore I don't get any tapering to my paths. There doesn't seem to be any way to change this default or correct this. The elipse option works as expected using spiro + pattern along path but the triangle options only use spiro + power stroke. Even if I add pattern along path afterwards I can't seem to find a way to add the shape for it to follow (admittedly this might just be an ignorance issue.) There might be a work around for this but I don't THINK it's supposed to work like this. Help please.

I'm using Inkscape 0.91 on Windows 7.

Hi Blindsite,

both options - Power Stroke and the Pattern along Path (PaP) path effect - would produce a tapering. What I think is that this tapering might be invisible because your line is too long for it to be discernible. Also make sure to have a fill for the line, not a stroke, and try if tweaking the width of the stroke *before you start drawing*, on another object, helps.

The width of the power stroke can also be changed after it has been drawn, by dragging on the little pink handle. You can create new handles if you Ctrl+Click on an existing one, and remove a handle by Ctrl+Alt-Clicking on one.

Or you can just draw a triangle, put it into your clipboard by doing Ctrl+C, then select 'From Clipboard' in the dropdown, instead of the triangle in /out functions. This will use the PaP path effect.

Hope these tips will help you find the way you want to go - if you have further questions, go ahead and ask!

Kind Regards,
 Maren
