Hi Algot,

- which Inkscape version have you been using before?
- which Inkscape version are you using now?

- the vanished filters, were they custom filters that you added? Or those that come with the program? Things that are saved in /usr/share/inkscape/filters will get overwritten on update, that's normal.

Custom filters should therefore only be saved in your personal filters directory:
/home/username/.config/inkscape/filters/

(you may need to create the directory yourself).

Kind Regards,
 Maren

I have been using Inkscape since 0.4x but when it became available, I upgraded to 0.91 when it was available...a while back. The "Bumps" included a lot of choices like "bubbly bumps" and "bubbly bumps alpha", etc.

I have upgraded more than once, but only this most recent upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10 caused the filters to go missing.

There is a file in /usr/share/inkscape/examples/filters.svg which opens and shows all the filters I am used to by example.

I do not know if there used to be a file in ~/.config/inkscape/filters.svg - I never bothered to look because things just "worked" before - now there isn't even a filters folder there.

If I make a folder, I can copy over the file from the examples folder and it becomes a Personal entry in the filters menu.

However, the filters are named uselessly from "f001" to "f218".

This is the solution?

I am disappointed. The ease of my work is compromised. I've been happy to do graphics for free sharing/reuse. http://runeman.org/clipart/

I'll keep working, but It won't be so quickly as before.

This was not a solution, I've been asking you a couple of questions to try and understand what is happening, Algot.
Even this post is about finding out what's up - I need more info to be able to help.

So, just that I understand this correctly:

Those bumps filters you need are inside the filters file from /usr/share/.... ?

And when you copy the file to ~/.config/inkscape/filters, they are back, but labelled differently?

Can you please:

- post the filters file (upload to some hosting service, please, and post a link)
- make a screenshot of the relevant part of the filters menu, after you have the filters file removed from the filters directory in your home directory
- make a list of the missing filters

(the folder in your home directory will only exist if you created it. If it didn't exist, then you probably have never had any custom filters.)

Regards,
 Maren

Maren,

Sorry. I wrote my response with too much haste.
At 70, my frustrations boil over too easily. I apologize.

Filters file: I've posted the filters.svg file here. http://runeman.org/clipart/filters.svg

Screenshots:

filters.png--with the filters.svg file in .config/inkscape/filters/ : http://runeman.org/clipart/filters.png
---note that this is the "Personal" tab of the filters menu, listing each of the 218 numbered filters. The tab only appears when the filters.svg file is in the .config folder.

filters2.png--a screenshot of the filters.svg file actually open in Inkscape: http://runeman.org/clipart/filters2.png
---note that if you open the file in Inkscape, it will both list all the "missing" filters and visually demonstrate the function of each one. There are far more filters there than just the bumps I mentioned initially. These are filters I assume are now in the "Personal" tab of the filters menu, each with a number designator. Since there are 20 bumps examples here, I'm inclined to skip your request to list them by hand in this reply. In the next screenshot, you can see all 20 easy versions are "missing". Perhaps it is possible to recreate them by making parameter changes in the current bumps... option. I don't want to do that, way too much trial and error.

filters3.png--a screenshot of the current "bumps" menu tab. clearly without any of the former things like "bubbly bumps"
---note that, as is, with the numbered filters, I bet the old filter effects are all available, just not really useful.

filters4.png--a screenshot of an enlarged section of the filters2.png shot so you can see that each example is labelled.

Thank you for your efforts to understand my confusion. I'm continuing to Google around to see if others have seen the same change.

I suppose it may be possible to rename the filters from their numbering. I have seen, but not read thoroughly, a question about that.

Now, I am off to bed for the day (going to watch Cubs vs. Dodgers for a while). I look forward to possible further information from you.

Thanks again.

Hi Algot,

apology accepted - I'm currently also quite frustrated (because of something very different), so I understand ;-)

Your filters file looks indeed very different from the one I have in that location. Could it be that it's the file from /examples/filters ?

I can't tell you what the cause was for the loss of bumps filters you have, but I can give you the link to the filters file that *should* be on your system, which you can paste into your /usr/share/inkscape/filters directory:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/RELEASE_0_91_BRANCH/download/tavmjong%40free.fr-20141116092325-dvobhobmli08dv3r/filters.svg-20091128124040-aej0x7yhxng1m6ly-12072/filters.svg

With that same file, all works as expected for me - and I hope it will for you, too.

(What is Cubs vs. Dodgers? Sports? I'm in Germany...)

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Maren,

Perfect!

The filters.svg file you recommended is just what I needed.
The easy filters I often use are available to me again.

Yes, Cubs vs Dodgers is baseball, "the American pastime". The Cubs won last night and advance to the final series in the year...called the "World Series" with typical U.S. hyperbole. ;-) The Cubs last won the World Series in 1918 and have not even played in the ultimate series since 1945. Though I am a Red Sox fan, living near Boston, Massachusetts, the Cubs were my favorite when I was a kid.

Pat yourself on the back, please. You have made my day.

Oh, and there's a bug report about your problem now, seems the packaging of Inkscape for Ubuntu 16.10 didn't go so well...
