0.91 not recognizing font family

Asked by Scott Gaulding

Using Windows 7 64-bit. Have been using 0.48 with no problems. Upgraded to 0.91 and it does not recognize or load a font with several faces (AauxNext with 16 faces). In the list of fonts I only see the regular and italized face versions listed.

Decided to backtrack to 0.48. After reinstalling 0.48, it will not generate a PDF file.

Any suggestions on which way to go?

Hi Scott,

what do you mean by 'It will not generate a PDF file'? What happens when you try? How do you try?

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Maren, thank you for responding.

In 0.48.5 I select the object on the drawing page (Cntl A) ... select Save As ... enter file name and then select PDF as the file type.
In the PDF window that comes up next ... Restrict to PDF 1.4 .. set resolution to 300 dpi ... select Export area is drawing.
I immediately get an error box/message saying ... File C:\Users\Scott-HP\Documents\ID#46714.pdf could not be saved.

A PDF is generated that is 414 bytes in size, but I think its only header information.
When I try to open with Acrobat Reader, I get an error message ... this file cannot be opened because it has no pages.

I tried several different drawings, and then some simple objects (square, circle) with no text ... same result each time.

Hope this helps.
Scott

Regarding 0.48 PDF problem --- I'm wondering if there is a setting in the Registry that is not proper. 0.48 was working for me without problems (recognized fonts, created PDF files). I uninstalled 0.48 and installed 0.91. 0.91 doesn't recognized certain OTF fonts. I uninstalled 0.91 and installed 0.48.5. Now 0.48 will not create a PDF file. Could it be something in the Registry that did not reset?

I feel my next alternative is to reformat the harddrive, and start over.

Regarding 0.91 font problem --- I saw a posting suggesting a work-around to the font family problem which was renaming the font files. This didn't work for me. I tried (1) removing the hyphen in each file name (AauxNext-Bd renamed to AauxNextBold) and (2) giving each a unique file name (Aaux15Bold, Aaux25Medium, Aaux35SemiBold). Same result. The font names are coded in the font files, and I suspect the system goes by the coding internal to the font file and not the name of the font file. I don't want to get into editing the font file.

Don't format your hard drive. Try to delete the user preferences file instead if you're using 0.48.5.
I think there's no workaround for the fonts issue currently (unless you want to try the development version, where it may be fixed), so using 0.48.5 is fine.

The settings file you can try to remove must be somewhere in your user home directory, e.g. C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape\preferences.xml
It will be created anew when you start Inkscape again.

More things to check:
Can you export a pdf if you go to Print, and then select 'Print to File', with file format 'pdf'?
Does Inkscape have permission to save in the selected location? I.e. can you save *any* files from Inkscape in C:\Users\Scott-HP\Documents\?

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Thanks for the suggestion, and I checked these things.

I removed the settings file and re-started Inkscape ... no change.

I am able to store some file types to the Documents folder on the hard drive: SVG, PNG, EMF.
These file types fail and do not store: PDF, PS, EPS

I can not export using Print to File. I also tried CutePDFWriter and it produces a blank page.

I un-installed 0.48.5 and installed 0.48.4. A teammate is having success with this version, however I'm getting the same results.

Okay, that's strange... I'd really like to help, but I don't know what to suggest.

I've looked through the bug reports, and there are many that concern pdf export. The thing is, it works with 0.91 for you (the pdf export), and so, the bug with the pdf export has been fixed already. The new bug with the font is unrelated, but annoying, but even that bug may already have been fixed in the development version.

The only thing left that I can think of is that you could try the development version to see if it fixes both problems for you (and doesn't introduce another one, hopefully...)

You can find that version linked from our download page (scroll down):
https://inkscape.org/en/download/

Sometime "soon", there will also be preview versions for the new version available.

 Maren

Maren, I really appreciate your help and the suggestions.

I tried the lastest development version, the font issue not fixed yet.

Good news, I think I found my problem. In the PDF options window that appears, if I select text to paths, everything works okay. The file sizes are bigger but that is okay. So I stick with that for a while and wait for the next version with the font fixes.

Again, many thanks for your help and suggestions.
Regards,
Scott

I'm glad you found a workaround, Scott!

When you have some time, could you browse through our bug reports to see if your font issue is already 'registered'? (here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape)

If the latest development version doesn't fix it, then the next version probably won't, either, unless someone is reminded of the issue, and invests some time into it (but there are many issues, and never enough people ;-) )

 Maren
