Eraser changes the looks of lines after erasing.

Asked by Nicole Holt

When I use the eraser on a line (from the Freehand lines tool), what I erase is erased but the shape or the looks of my lines completely change.
For example: When I have a line, and I erase one part of it, the whole thing suddenly turns into hemi-spheres.

All I want to do is erase part of the line.

Hi Nicole,

the eraser automatically closes shapes when erasing things. This is currently a limitation of the tool.

The usual method to erase parts of lines (=paths) would be to use the node tool, then to select the nodes that you don't need, and to delete those, maybe split the path, if desired.

Or you could use the Boolean operation 'Cut Path' to cut the path into pieces.

If these things sound new to you, because you're new to vector drawings, take a look at some introductory tutorials which also explain the 'vector' part of drawings made with Inkscape, for example one of those listed as 'Beginner tutorials' here:

Kind Regards,
