How do I cut out a section of an image and make transparent

Asked by Jeremy Pisanic

I have an image of a wedding band and want to cut out the center so that it is transparent. How do I do this? Which tool? Using the Tweak/Clip tools I was able to make the background transparent but the center of the ring is still white. I need to cut it out so it is transparent too.

Hi Jeremy,

if the picture you are trying to edit is a raster image, you need to use an inverse clip.

Make the clip mask. That can be any object, really, you can use the rectangle tool or the pencil tool, for example.

Make it so large that it covers all your image.

Now you need to make a hole into it in the shape of the hole you want to have.
Do this by creating an object that has the shape of the hole (i.e. a circle, I guess), put this above the huge covering object, select both, and do Path -> Difference to subtract the small object from the big one.

Now use the large thing with the hole as a clip for your image.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
