Draw a rectangle over the centre of the image. Give the rectangle a white fill, no stroke, and some blur (maybe about 15%). Select the rectangle and the image and set mask (Object -> Mask -> Set).

I am new to Inkscape and the solution accomplished nothing. I wonder whether the helper understands that a vignette is an oval image. I would like to convert a rectangular portrait to a vignette.

Hmm. Did you try following the example that was given to you? It accomplished much for me: Yes they made a rectangular vignette (you mentioned rectangles) but it should be plain, after following the instructions, that any shape could be used in place of a rectangle.

Et voila!

FWIW vignette's are decorative borders often used with images that fade off towards the edges, I don't think there's a restriction inherent in the term to an oval vignette. Perhaps if you need a more specific result you could be more explicit next time? Also good to remember not everyone on the internet speaks English as a native and most live in cultures different to your own.

... and as you're new, when someone does something for you - even if they get it wrong - it's polite to say "thank you". You could also say "please" when requesting assistance. It all helps to make us more comfortable when we give our time up for one another.

Grace and peace,

I am new to Inkscape and the exercise accomplished nothing other than to paste a rectangle
onto the image.

Thank you for the feedback, and for the correction. I have misdirected helpers.I have no
difficulty in fading the borders, what I am wanting to achieve is to convert a rectangular
image to an oval shape. Once this is accomplished, I can fade or darken the edges of the
image.

I will apreciate any assistance.

Thank you pbhj, but since the page you recommended states "This upload is not currently
available for viewing" I remain in my ignorance of how to achieve the objective of
creating an oval vignette.
