You need to be a little clearer as to what steps you take to recreate the problem, which operating system is this occurring in, perhaps upload the file in question so somebody can try and decipher the problem easier.

The pic is this one: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Earthlights_dmsp.jpg which, as instructed, i downloaded to my desktop.

As far as my 'steps'....i clicked the 'open' button > found the file [on my desktop] > clicked 'open'/'ok' [cant remember off the top of my head which on it is] > noting happens. I also tried the 'import' thing, took similar steps, with the same result. Ive tried to open it many times...with no sucsess. The file size is something like 8 million bytes i think, so could that be the problem. As far as the operating system goes: its an 'Advent Laptop' with 'Windows XP' [the normal version] and if its any use there's a sticker on the computer that says: 'ATI Radeon Xpress 200M with PCI Express Graphics up to 128MB shared memory'.

thanks,

This may sound a little patronising, but you woulnd not believe how many times it has happened to me personally.

Has the saved file actually got an extension, x.JPG rather than just being called x.

You can check this by right clicking the icon for the image and going to properties.

Checked and yep its definitely a JPEG file (although there is no '.JPEG' on the actual name on my desktop, as with all the files) but when i open the 'properties' it says 'Type of file: JPEG Image', also the image opens fine with 'Windows Image Viewer' (or whatever its called) and in programs such as 'MS Word'........

Something I came across on my relatively low spec laptop, trying to open it in Inkscape and also Gimp caused a lot of hang, due to the image being 8mb in size, this has made me wonder if the window is hanging as windows has a habit of making the entire window going white.

Can you help with this problem?
