Inkscape should be able to open AI files v9 and above. (I've had success with CS3) Some drawing features (like layers) may not come across. EPS isn't currently supported.
If you have access to Illustrator, exporting to SVG or PDF are other options.

Is there a way to change gif/jpeg images to other formats so they can be exported to my sign cutting program signcutx2?

Hi. GIF and JPEG are bitmap formats. Signcut x2 works with vector formats. You can import bitmaps into Inkscape and try Path-Trace Bitmaps to get vector files. Depending on the complexity of your artwork, you can also trace manually with the pen tool.

I have a similar question as Youngie: I keep getting a runtime error in v0.46 when trying to open an aiv9 file and a :can not open the file x.ai (from v9) when using earlier versions of inkscape. Any ideas?

@Hubblecat

Sure, I have an idea ;-) Importing PDF and PDF based AI files appeared only in 0.46.

Can you help with this problem?
