what size should i run this program
i now ham running in 800x600 pixels
i cannot see all of the inkscape work place

You might find it better to use a higher resolution, such as 1024x768. But if you want to use Inkscape at 800x600, then you should make the icons smaller: open the Inkscape Preferences dialog (Shift+Ctrl+P), go to the Misc section and make sure that both the options for small icons are checked, then close the dialog and restart Inkscape. With the smaller icons, Inkscape should work OK at 800x600 (on Windows, at least), as long as you run it maximized or use the full-screen mode (F11).

if you are using inkscape 0.46, you can also undock the toolbar so that that
are all accessable...

also removing the rulers can also help.

here is a screenshot i took of 0.46 running on an eeepc:

which shows that inkscape 0.46 can be fairly workable on a smaller res
screen...
