How do I change the canvas color?

Hi there,

I want to create a poster with a background color that is not white. I set up a page in File->Document Properties and change the _background_ color but this affect the whole workspace. How do I change just the canvas color?

Don't know if there's an official feature in Inkscape to do this but a work-around is simply to snap a colored rectangle to the page boundaries.

Sounds so easy, but isn't that coloured rectangle an object then and not the background any more?
