Inkscape does not export in native AI format although it can save to formats that Illustrator understands such as PS, EPS and PDF. Inkscape's native format, SVG, is also a format that AI supports, but the two implementations are not 100% compatible.

Thank you for your reply. Do any of the formats mentioned accurately preserve layering and object properties when moving to Illustrator?

Layers are not preserved. Regarding object properties, results will vary depending on the specific property. Basics like text, paths, fills, transparency seem to do OK. Other properties, not so good. Give it a try, see what you think.

OK. Thx. I had heard that there was a third-party plugin to Inkscape to export in .AI... just a rumor?
