Is there the concept of a stencil in Inkscape?

Asked by Flavelle

I'm coming from Visio, having recently converted to Linux. In Visio, I am used to being able to develop a set of 'standard' shapes in a stencil that can be used in multiple drawings. Is there a similar concept in Inkscape?

I've never used Visio, but I think I understand what you want. There have been similar requests before; to implement saving objects as templates so you can reuse them in every new document - bug 172216

Inkscape doesn't have that feature (yet?), but others have suggested a workaround: collect all your shapes in a separate svg file, and when you're working on a file that needs those predefined shapes you just keep the file with the templates open and copy paste from there.

If you have the "objects" as separate files and use the import dialog (File > Import ...), instead of selecting an import you can drag and drop from the import folder you have open. That way you don't need to put all "object" images into one file.

I think if the import dialog could be docked (like the colour dialogs, etc.) then this would effectively be the feature requested here.
