Distorting the shape of circle/ellipses

I stumbled onto a tool last night that puts four red lines on each of the four sides of circles, and allows me to manipulate their shapes a bit. For the life of me, I can't figure out how I did it. Any help?

Possible that you selected the circle, chose Path - Object to Path, and then used the node selection tool to distort the circle(?)
