In Linux Using the GDM login manager chose at the language selection your preferred language then do login
Example :
If you login using English language all the menus will be in English
If you chose to use German language at the GDM them after the login all menus will be in German
and so on
I think that this is also available using KDM login manager to

In Windows XP operating systems you need to go to control panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel)
There chose Regional and Language Options
For German language:
On the Regional Optional Options tab you need to chose German (Germany) in one of the dropdown menus and Germany on the other one
Next to the German (Germany) will be a Customize button to help you in customizing the time, date, and such other things how they look and work
On the languages tab Chose the Details button to ad German and other language input methods (this does not affect the menus in any way)
On the Advanced tab chose German (Germany) from the only dropdown menu

Then press OK and when it asks you to insert the windows CD you may skip that and chose no as all the necessary files are already on your computer but if you wish go ahead and insert the CD
After all is done reboot the computer and you are all done
To change the language again do this again but chose some another language of your choice from all of those tabs

Hi,
I guess I didn't supply enough information before.

First I am using a German Windows XP Professional... so the German language is default. However I want to run the program in English.

Using your suggestion I changed the setting of the "Advanced Tab" drop menu from Deutsch to English(US) and rebooted. When I started the program again, I still had the same results... all the menus were in German. According to the description, this setting should determine the default language menu settings for programs that do not support unicode.... and it has no effect on programs that support unicode. Does this mean that inkscape does not support unicode?

I can imagine that the software is looking at my defaults and setting the proper language... but then I would think that there is somewhere override the automatic setting and select a different language. Previously I was using an older version of inkscape, but my computer crashed and I needed to re-install. I am really not sure... but I thought my old version was in English... and that I had been using it in English... so I was surprised that I couldn't select it.

The easiest way is to go to Program Files\Inkscape\share\locale or something like that and remove German (de) localization file :)

Hi Alexandre, Yes that solved my problem.

FYI: The file de folder is found in Programme\Inkscape\locale\de
After removing the de folder everything was in English... just like I wanted.

Thanks again.

Hello, please I want this software in ENGLISH. Where I can get it? From where I can download, please?

Sincerely, I don´t understand why the installer of the software don´t ask me in the installation of the program in what language I want to use it like hundreds of thousands of software programs do.

Language is a very personal matter, it´s a personal preference, that I should have right, of to decide alone, and not no other else in my place, doing my work: to decide the things by myself.

Nobody should decide by me. I don´t need anybody to decide the things by me. I can do it alone.

I suppose that, this is made so, of this way, 'with the best intentions' but doing it so, 'somebody' is wrong because 'somebody' is stealing me my capacity of decision without any right of to do it and so 'somebody' is trampling my rights.

I´m sorry, I don´t want to be rude, but this is the truth, in my humble opinion.

Have I not even started using the program and do I already have to do changes?

Many thanks

Pat.

Hi Pat,
I would have to agree with you, I would prefer that the installer asks me what language I want to use... however this automatic detections seems to be a trend with a lot of software.

Anyway, I'm not an expert... but it appears that English is the default... and is always there. To get it enabled in Windows... you need to remove the \special_language library. Mine was in German and found under C:\Programme\Inscape\locale\de... for Deutschland. After removing the folder I had everything in English.

The original tip was from Alexandre Prokoudine... and it worked, although a more elegant solution would be to have an option in the "Inkscape Preferences" that would allow one to switch between the installed languages.

I hope this helps...
