Cannot select transparent objects

Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Inkscape Version: 0.46

If I open a clean session of Inkscape 0.46, draw an object (rectangle), and change transparency from 100 to 0, I cannot select the object on the canvas by left clicking on it. Windowing around the object will select it but only if you know that the object is there. Is this intended functionality or is this perhaps a bug?
