Does Inkscape have pen pressure sensitivity when used with graphics tablet?

Asked by Michael Enders

I have acquired a graphics tablet which, when used with the right software, is able to vary width of line with pressure on stylus. Can this feature be made to work with Inkscape? If so, what is the procedure?

Hi Michael,

yes, that works (at least for me - but it also has a few drawbacks for me, e.g. using the mouse in parallel sometimes doesn't work).

There's a settings section for this (Edit -> Input Devices), where you can play with different settings, see also
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Creating.html
(search for "0.48 Dialog" - but the interface seems to have changed for the current version again).

Basically, select the device you want to use, then select how you want to use it in the drop down.

The tools where this currently has an effect are the calligraphy tool and the tweak tool.

Kind Regards,

I experimented with this a lot and still can't get Inkscape to do anything to recognize pen pressure. I am not sure what the reference to "0.48 dialog" means, since the version of Inkscape I have is 0.91. My tablet shows up in "input devices" only as "tablet", not with brand or model. Tablet I have is PenPower Tooya Master ModelTWMNA62. There is no "hardware" tab on any dialog box I see. My computer operating system is OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite). I save setting for Inkscape to recognize pen pressure and it says to restart for change to take effect. I have quit and restarted Inkscape and entire computer system several times and Inkscape never recognizes pen pressure. It just draws fixed line in pencil and pen (bezier) mode, and same variations in width in calligraphy mode that depend not at all on pen pressure, and only on direction on pad I am moving pen. The pen pressure funtion works fine when tested in the setup softward for the graphics tablet, so I doubt very much if this is a hardware problem.

Hi Michael,

Pencil and Pen tools do not react to pressure at all. This is because they draw paths, and paths in SVG have a fixed width, so there is nothing the pressure sensitivity would change.

The Calligraphy tool as well as the tweak tool have a pen pressure activation button in their toolbar. Does it work if you activate that button before trying to use them with your tablet?

Which setting from the dropdown did you choose? Screen or Window (probably both?) ? And is there just a single device listed or are there multiple devices when you select 'tablet' in the list?

I referenced the dialog for 0.48, because the paragraph above it is for an even older version of Inkscape. The documentation is outdated :/

Kind Regards,
 Maren
