Hi Daniel,

to me, this sounds as if you do not have the font, that Inkscape would need to display the text correctly, installed on your computer.

Can you verify by clicking on the text and looking into the status line (at the bottom of the window) to see which font is used?

If it says 'sans-serif', then Inkscape is using a fallback font to display the text.

To solve the problem, find out the font name for the text (either by selecting the text, then opening the XML editor and looking for any indication of 'font-family' in the panel at the right of the dialog, or by asking the person who gave you the svg file for the font name).
Then install the font.
Then you may need to restart the computer.
Then, hopefully, Inkscape will find the new font and use it to display the text correctly.

There are, however, a few bugs in Inkscape version 0.91 which prevent Inkscape from finding some fonts.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
