Inkscape does not open Mac OS X Yosemite

Asked by Jessica Martens

I downloaded Inkscape awhile ago and wasn't able to get it open, even with the XQuartz. A then tried re-downloading both programs, with the same problem. When I try to open Inkscape (from Finder), the icon only bounces up and down, and for a minute there's a box that says "Verifying "Inkscape"...". Then when I right click on the icon once it's stopped bouncing, it says "Application Not Responding".

I've tried to read other people's solutions, but don't really understand how typing things into the XQuartz terminal works (is this considered coding? I'm a bit unexperienced with all that!). I also read something about extra fonts having trouble loading and creating problems. I do have quite a few extra fonts on my computer, but am not really keen on deleting them.

If anyone has a possible solution or guidance, would really appreciate it!

It's possible that your Mac is trying to caution you against opening a program from an unknown developer.

Try right-clicking (or control-clicking) on the Inkscape icon to bring up the contextual menu, and then select "open" from that contextual menu. You may get a warning that you need to click through. And, give it a couple of minutes to open. If this works, you should subsequently be able to open Inkscape in the normal way (and quickly).

Was about to answer that I already tried that and set it to allow apps downloaded from "anywhere" (which I was sure I did)
...but I checked the security settings to get the wording right, and found it wasn't set to "anywhere"!!! Thank you for helping me to find my own mistake/failure to actually set the settings. :P
