Creating an outline around a simple object

Hi Jack,

an outline of a path or shape in Inkscape is called a stroke.

To add one to your star, open the Fill & Stroke dialog, select the second tab and choose a flat color for the stroke (second button, the one to the right of the X). Fine tune the color below and set the width of the stroke in the third tab of the dialog.
