How do I draw a line of round dashes

Asked by Janet Moss

I am sure the answer must be somewhere, but I want to draw a dotted line with round dots. Is this possible?

Hi Janet,

yes, it's possible, but the rounded dashes are not among the default dashes Inkscape ships with.

First, set the linecaps of the stroke to rounded in the 3rd tab of the fill and stroke dialog.

Then, select the object, and open the XML editor (Edit -> XML editor).

In the list (at the right of the dialog) that shows the object's attributes, click on the style attribute.
In the edit box below, search for

stroke-dasharray:a, b;

a is the length of each dot/dash (the length of the part *between* the two rounded linecaps). Set it to a very small value to get (almost) perfect circles.
b is the distance between the dots/dashes. Choose any value you like.

Click on 'Set'.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
