I need to create a venn diagram with proper shading

Asked by Teri Geddes

I need to create a Venn diagram with proper shading where the ellipses overlap. I'm new to this and cannot find this in your help. Can you please point me in the right direction or better yet give simple directions on how I can make that happen?

Hi Teri,

there are many ways to do this in Inkscape. These are three of them:

1. Option
If ultimate precision is not important to you, just draw circles with strokes and use the paint bucket tool to fill the intersecting areas.

2. Option:
If precision is important:

draw the circles
select them all (drag a selection box around them)
duplicate them (Ctrl+D)
Path -> Combine the current selection (which is a duplicate of the circles, lying on top of them)
Now select all circles below the current selection (drag a selection box around all circles, Shift+Click to deselect uppermost object, which was created by combining the upper circles)
Path -> Union the now selected circles.

Select both objects (the combined and the unioned circles)
Path -> Division

Color each segment as you like.

3. Option:
Or you could also just make all circles partially transparent, so the lower ones will shine through.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Thank you for your prompt reply. I do know how to draw the ellipse, what I need to know is where the tools are within inkscape to draw the borders and configure transparency.

Thanks,
Teri

Hi Teri,

in that case, I would like to point you to the Inkscape manuals:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/inkscape/styling-objects/fill-and-stroke/
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html

(It's a bit difficult to describe the location and usage of the 'Fill and Stroke' dialog without pictures here - which cannot be used in this answers section - the manual, however, has a lot of them).

You can also try out the interactive tutorials that come with Inkscape, see Help -> Tutorials.

A lot of other materials can be found in the 'Learn' section on our website and its submenus:
https://inkscape.org/en/learn/

Another option would be this (longer) beginner tutorial, if you're interested to get a more general overview about the software:

Kind Regards,
 Maren
