Cant open tiff files?

Asked by Justin Phillips

I recently started using inkscape for the first time. It has worked fine with PDF files but it will not open tiff files. Please let me know what I need to do to make these work.

Hi Justin,

works just as expected for me. File -> Open -> sometiff.tiff.

In order to help you, we will need some more info:

1. Which Inkscape version do you use?

2. Which file from our website did you use for installation?

3. Which operating system are you on?

4. Which operating system version?

5. Are there other imported bitmaps in your image?

6. Can you upload the SVG file and the TIFF file you're trying to import somewhere? (use a file hosting service like dropbox, framadrop, google drive - and allow access without being logged in to those services)

Kind regards,
 Maren

Forgot this one:

7. What exactly happens if you try to import the tiff file?

1: inkscape .91

2: windows 32 bit installer

3: windows 8.1

4: not sure

5: I don't think so, it is a tiif file I downloaded from dropbox, the
person I downloaded it from colored it in photoshop.

6: It is loaded on my dropbox and I loaded it to google drive but I don't
see how to make it accessable with out a password. I downloaded the files
to my computer from dropbox. I can open them without access to those
services in other programs.

7: I can open other file formats just fine, but I have not been able to
open any tiff files. This is what happens.

Hi Justin,

thank you for your answers.
For google drive, please see the section 'share using a link' on this page: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/2494822?hl=en

But I think we might not need the file - this sounds like a known bug with the 32bit Windows version. ( see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1447131 )

If you really need the TIFF import, and your computer allows this, you can install the 64bit Windows version, and - as long as the file is not too large, and there are no other bitmaps imported into the file - it will probably work just fine. Unfortunately, the 64bit version comes with its own set of extra bugs (related to printing and performance with rulers displayed).

If you decide to use the 64bit version, you should make sure to use the option 'Default import resolution' when you import the file (else: possible crash, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1447131)

The easiest way would probably be to open the TIFF file with a different program (e.g. the Gimp, http://gimp.org), and save it to a different format (png if possible) and import that new file into Inkscape.

Hope this helps,
 Kind Regards,
 Maren
