Inkscape

I'm trying to learn about Inkscape but can't see the objects that are drawn

I select the ellipse tool, draw an ellipse. I can see the handles but not the ellipse. I know that it's probably simple but this is my first attempt with Inkscape.

you're not alone :)

In fact, this problem is so common for newbies, that Brynn has written an entire article about this:

(your problem is probably related to objects being transparent)
