cutting objects

Asked by Brigitte Friedl

I have designed a street plan for a "how to find us" description and need to cut of the ends of the streets to adjust the plan into a frame.
I have not found a tool yet for cutting/trimming the paths. How can I do this?

Hi, Brigitte!

First you have to group all the paths, then draw a rectangle (filled is okay) over them. Then simply select the group and the rectangle and do Object->Clip->Set on 'em.

Make sure that the rectangle is above your group, because the clipping contour should be the topmost object (you can bring it to the top with the Home key).

Hope this helps :)

Now I have another problem. I have imported the svg-file in a second svg file. This file I saved as a pdf-file.
Unfortunately the ends of my streets are visible again.
What shall I do?

That's an expected behaviour for PDF export, it does not yet support clipping contours. You may track the status of this bug through this page:

With the help of a trick I solved the problem. I have placed four small rectangles without filling and outlines over my streetplan to cover the ends.
I saved the svg-file and imported it in the second svg-file. The exported pdf-file is now as desired without the unnessary streetends.

Dear Artem, I followed your instructions but still can't cut my object (consisting of a few separate paths) into two down the middle. Been searching all over the place for a solution. Yours, Dave
